Electricians Help! Garage Studio Dilemma..?
So I just moved into a townhouse in San Diego that has an attached garage which I planned to turn into a little studio/music lounge (and by little I mean a 8 1/2 ft by 20 ft room). Before I signed the lease I scoped the place out while the other tenants were still in there, they said the garage was powered but they had so much crap in there I couldn’t really see how many or where the outlets were located. Once I moved in and saw the room cleared I found the only source of power in the room, a single standard outlet on the CEILING of my GARAGE. WTF good does that do me? haha..
So anyway, I’m trying to figure out how to work around this one single outlet. What are the dangers of running an extension cord from the ceiling and along my wall into a power strip to power my gear? I’m worried about setting my building on fire. I got a 25 ft, 12 gauge extension cord that runs 15A if that helps any, and I’ll be extending that with a Belkin power supply with a max load of 15A.
The equipment I need to run are-
-1200 mk5′s turntable x2
-ttm 57sl mixer
-Macbook (with a MOTU lite audio interface thru firewire)
-22 INCH HP HD monitor
-Rockit 5 Studio Monitor x2
-Microkorg Key Synth
-(pretty soon, a MAC TOWER)
(I also have a 120V guitar amp but I’m not counting on being able to plug that in.)
Am I pretty much screwed or am I able to do this safely? If I am screwed, anyone know a good electrician in the San Diego area that can install receptacles for cheap? (how much are they anyway?) I’m on a tite budget. I gotta save money to build bass traps and lay some carpet too
