First rule of thumb in courtroom dramas, most writing coaches would say, is to avoid courtroom scenes. They tend to make the action static and limit the drama that can better be explained through re-enactments and flashbacks that re-late to testimony. But this CBS mini is in the adept hands of Lawrence Schiller and writer Norman Mailer who manage to craft this story with an impeccable eye for detail and a flair for nuanced drama. Greatly

enhanced by Christopher Plummer’s Emmy-worthy turn as F. Lee Bailey, “American Tragedy” is about as good as TV gets in retelling a story where the entire audience already knows the ins, the outs and the outcome.

To a certain extent, the O.J. Simpson trial rewrote the book on how to set a compelling drama within the halls of justice; in its wake have been a series of well-received shows and films that rely on a newfound patience for and, possi-bly, a comprehension of law. Court dramas, particularly TV’s “Law & Order” and “The Practice” and the films “The Insider,” “Erin Brockovich” and “A Civil Ac-tion,” are of a considerably different tone than their

predecessors. “American Tragedy” follows a story arc not unlike that of “A Civil Action.”

Subtext of this tragedy is the battle of wits and ego as attorneys Johnnie Cochran (Ving Rhames) and Robert Shapiro (Ron Silver) evolve into publicity-craving grandstanders, hungry for positions of power in social and legal cir-cles. Shapiro starts strong and fades to the background as the story moves from the planning to the execution; Cochran grows from an aw-shucks innocent into a media-savvy bully, suggesting Shapiro gave him a stage to become a star.

Schiller stands alone as a director of screenplays based on his books, his last being the JonBenet Ramsey saga “Perfect Murder, Perfect Town.” In “American Tragedy” he takes part one to dissect the pretrial legal strategy from the first phone call placed to Shapiro up to the jurors’ tour of Simpson’s Brentwood es-tate. Part two starts with L.A. police detective Mark Fuhrman taking the stand and closes with the real Simpson mouthing

“thank you” to the jury as he stands between the superimposed fictional Cochran and Barry Scheck (Bruno Kirby).

Mini sheds little light on anything that might not have been known before, though viewers will certainly bring their own recollections to bear in judging show’s veracity. Where, for example, is Cochran donning the knit cap or Nicole Brown’s relatives or Kato Kaelin? Actual footage of the father of the murdered Ronald Goldman reminds that two people lost their lives, but the media barrage from the Goldmans and Browns that reverberated through Los Angeles seems, at most, to be background noise in these lawyers’ lives.

All views of Simpson are obscured by scenery or darkness, though his presence is felt constantly through the speaker phone. He advises his lawyers about their conduct, tactics and even diction, but mostly he exclaims “I didn’t do it” over and over and over.

The real trial brought this legal dream team into America’s homes for so long that the actors’ physical traits work for and against them. Plummer fully enve-lopes Bailey’s determination and the pride-swallowing he has to do as his tac-tics and advice are shot down by the two other big cheeses. As DNA expert Barry Scheck, Kirby benefits from a reasonably close resemblance and Kirby’s naturally squirrely acting style.

The two leads are problematic, though. Rhames is far bigger than the lean Cochran, and his presence is far more in-your-face intimidating than the real-life Cochran ever appeared to be. Cochran, from most accounts, was slick and calculated. In “American Tragedy,” he is driven by anger and blind ambition.

Silver’s Shapiro is all too familiar, his portrayal disturbingly similar to the way he played Alan Dershowitz in the pic “Reversal of Fortune” and the late concert promoter Bill Graham in the one-man stage show “Bill Graham Presents.” He handles pomposity and deviousness well — enough to make one wonder if his Shapiro portrayal isn’t the one that’s most dead-on.

Clyde Kusatsu makes for a fine Judge Ito, and Darryl Alan Reed admirably makes the most of the thankless role lawyer Carl Douglas played during the trial. Robert LuPone is constrained by the way Bob Kardashian is written — as an uncouth yes-man — and Ruben Santiago-Hudson has to play prosecutor Chris Darden as enemy to all. Diana LaMar’s Marcia Clark is effective but limited.

Technically, the pic is remarkably sharp as Schiller’s direction is clean and pointed. Editing by Peter and Katina Zinner is seamless, briskly moving the ac-tion on the first night and enhancing the collapse of the various relationships on the second. One well-done aspect is the marriage of new footage with actual cross-examination of witnesses such as Fuhrman.

Mini makes extensive use of downtown L.A. and Westside locales, from restau-rants to law offices to homes. It’s all as real as a 45 mph ride down the San Diego Freeway.

Los Angeles Dodgers – The Four Great Teams Of The American League Of The West

Major league baseball is composed of several divisions. One of their major divisions is the National League of the West. This division is composed of two teams that have made it to the top 10 World Series Title holders. Currently, they have five members to which two of them were the expansion teams in 1993 and 1998.

Let us get to know these teams by heart:

1. Arizona Diamondbacks – This is one of the expansions of this division that is from Phoenix, Arizona USA. Despite being one of the youngest teams in baseball, they grabbed their first World Series title in 2001. They were also the National League Champions in 2001 and National League Western Division Champions in 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2007. Their star player is Luiz Gonzales. He faced Mariano Rivera, a Yankee pitcher, in the 9th inning, hitting the ball that soared in the left field. This hit won the team their championship title.

2. Colorado Rockies – This was one of the expansions in 1993. They have not won their first World Series. However, they had their first opportunity to fight for it in 2007 against Boston Red Sox. They never had any winnings from the National league nor were Division Championships but they 2- time Wild Card Winners in 1995 and 2007.

3. Los Angeles Dodgers – They is one of the top five teams to win the most World Title series. They grabbed six titles and the last time was in 1988. They have taken into account 21 National League Pennant and one AA Pennant. This team is one of the best teams in this division. They have many Hall of Famers since this team has been existing in 1855.

Nevertheless, they still have an outstanding record for the league.

4. San Diego Padres – This is one of the founding members of the division and has been existed since 1969. They became the National league Champions in 1998 and 1984 and bagged five Division Championships in 1984, 1996, 1998, and 2005-2006. Trever Hoffman was one of the best players and was name as MLB All – Star 6 times.

5. San Francisco Giants – Yes they are the Giants from California USA. They won five World Title Series, the latest was in 1954. They are also one of the founding members of this division. They had this name in 1958 but earlier than that, they were known as New York Giants and New York Gothams. They had twenty National Pennants latest in 2002 and six Division Championship Titles latest in 2003. This team is one of the MLB teams who are hunted by curses, namely the Coogans Bluff and Krukow Kurse. They had one of the most memorable moments in MLB back in 1951 when Bobby Thompson made it.

Los Angeles Dodgers is the leader in terms of standings. Yet all of these teams are all to watch out in every baseball competition as they already made their sound. Hopefully, the Padres and Rockies will grab their first titles soon. In addition, The Giants will soon lift their curse and make it back to grab their World Series title.

Freddie Brister is a huge fan of Major League Baseball and the Los Angeles Dodgers. His love for the game of Baseball started with an older brother throwing the baseball around in the backyard with cousins and neighborhood friends. He later played in high school, college and coached high school sports for 25 years, before retiring to write for Sports Fan Treasures. Check out his Los Angeles Dodgers Merchandise.

Metallica Unveils Massive North American Tour

Metallica first came about in 1981, when drummer Lars Ulrich put out a newspaper wanted ad in an attempt to form a heavy metal group. By 1983, the Los Angeles band was fully formed, named and ready to release their first official album. Kill ‘Em All was released that year, to modest sales and reviews. Ride the Lightning was released the following year and although neither album succeeded commercially, by the end of 1984, the band was able to retain a substantial following in the thrash metal community.

In 1985, Metallica released Master of Puppets, an album which became their first to ever reach gold status. Master of Puppets was followed by …And Justice for All in 1998 and by Metallica three years later. The self-titled 1991 release was of particular importance, as it had become the group’s first largely mainstream album, thanks to the popularity of its hit single Enter Sandman. To date, Metallica remains the group’s most successful record, reaching a status of fifteen times platinum in the United States alone.

From their small-time heavy metal roots in Los Angeles, Metallica was now being deemed one of the biggest groups to ever grace the heavy metal genre. To date, they have sold over 100 million records worldwide, won countless awards (including seven Grammies) and were even honoured with an “Official Metallica Day” by San Fransisco mayor Willie Brown.

In celebration and promotion of their latest release, Death Magnetic, the group has now set out to once again do what they do best: perform live for diehard metal fans on the road. Metallica’s 2008 concert tour will take place in various venues throughout the United States and Canada starting in October and won’t end until January 1, 2009.

The Franchises Of The American Football League

The American Football League was started in 1960 by professional football enthusiasts, many of whom had been denied ownership of National Football League franchises, and was set up to compete against the more established NFL. The league consisted of ten teams, though only eight were in the league from the start, and most of them were placed in cities that had no competing NFL franchise. In the beginning the AFL was not given much respect, but through displaying their on team talent and eventually proving themselves equal on the field, they earned the respect of pro football fans every where. There was decent parity in the league with six of the original eight franchises winning a league title during the AFL’s existence. Many of the teams experienced instability and many experienced long stretches of success, but in the end when it came time for the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, every AFL franchise was brought into the NFL and eventually proved themselves to be worthwhile additions.

The Boston Patriots
The Patriots spent their entire stay in the AFL as the Boston Patriots, not changing to their later and more famous name of the New England Patriots until 1971. During their AFL run, the Patriots called a number of fields their home fields. They started playing games at Nickerson Field and remained their for three years before spending their next six seasons as the football tenant of the famous Fenway Park, they then played their final season as a member of the AFL in Alumni Stadium at Harvard University. Though the Patriots did not win an AFL Championship and in fact finished the decade with a below .500 record, they were an important part of the league and after a long period of struggling have become one of the more successful franchises in the NFL.

The Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills won back to back AFL titles in 1964 and 1965 and had a very successful run as members of the AFL. Despite their two championships, the Bills still managed to have a below .500 record over the course of their stay in the AFL. Despite this losing record, the Bills ownership was instrumental in the league being successful. The Bills, playing in War Memorial Stadium, were one of only two original AFL franchises to play their home games in the same stadium every year they were in the league. The Bills would go on to experience some early success in the NFL behind star running back O.J. Simpson, before struggling for a number of years. The Bills made their mark in the NFL in the early 1990′s with four consecutive Super Bowl appearances, although they did not win any of them.

The Cincinnati Bengals
An ownership group led by former Cleveland Browns founder and head coach Paul Brown was awarded an AFL expansion franchise in 1967. With the groundwork for the AFL-NFL merger already having been laid, Brown agreed to have his team join the AFL only after being assured it would be part of the merged league a few seasons later. The Bengals played both of their AFL season home games in Nippert Stadium and compiled a record of 7-20-1 during their two seasons in the league. After becoming part of the NFL, the Bengals would go on to struggle for a number of years before experiencing some success in the 1980′s, culminating in two losing Super Bowl appearances both at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers.

The Dallas Texans
The Dallas Texans were one the most successful AFL franchise during the league’s run, winning three championships and going 92-50-5 over ten seasons. Texans’ owner Lamar Hunt was instrumental in the founding of the AFL, which he largely pursued after being denied the chance to own an NFL team. The Texans won the third AFL Championship in a double overtime game against the two time championship winning Houston Oilers. The Texans shared the city of Dallas with their NFL counterpart the Cowboys, and after three seasons including a league championship, the Texans determined that the city couldn’t support two professional football teams. Looking for a team that he could commute to easily from Dallas, owner Lamar Hunt decided on Kansas City, the team would also be renamed the Chiefs. The Dallas Texans were one of two AFL teams to change their mascot (the other being the Titans/Jets) and also one of two AFL teams to change cities (the other being the Chargers). The Chiefs would experience great success in the AFL, eventually winning the final league championship (Super Bowl IV in 1969) before the AFL-NFL merger was completed. The Chiefs would go on to experience moderate success as full members of the NFL, though they would fall short of repeating the league championship winning ways of their AFL days.

The Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos were one of the original franchises of the AFL in 1960. They were also the least successful of all of the AFL franchises, winning no championships and compiling a record of 39-97-4 during there years in the American Football League. The Broncos were the only original AFL franchise to not have a winning record during their time in the league. Despite this, the Broncos have gone on to become one of the more successful franchises following the merger of the two leagues. The Broncos first experienced success in the late 1970′s and experienced it again in the 1980′s. Their peak of success came in the late 1990′s when quarterback John Elway led them to two consecutive Super Bowl victories.

The Houston Oilers
The Houston Oilers had a great start in the AFL, winning the championship in not only the league’s first year, but in the second year as well. They then lost the championship game in their third season in a double overtime game against the Dallas Texans that was at the time the longest professional football game ever played. The Oilers made a big splash early on by signing Heisman Trophy winner Billy Cannon out of Louisiana State University and it paid off for them. By the time of the AFL-NFL merger though the Oilers career record in the AFL was just three games over .500 (72-69-4). The Oilers also earned a distinction as the first professional football team to play its home games indoors when they moved into the Astrodome for the 1968 season after playing their home games in two different stadiums up to that point (Jeppesen Stadium from 1960-64 and Rice Stadium from 1965-67). After moving on into the NFL, the Oilers would go on to experience some success in the 1970′s behind running back Earl Campbell, and in the 1980′s behind quarterback Warren Moon, but wouldn’t make it back to a championship game until their loss to the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXIV.

The Los Angeles Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers were one of the more successful AFL franchises, winning one league champtionship and accumulating the second most victories in the league (behind only Dallas/Kansas City) while compiling a record of 88-51-6. After their first season in the league, the Chargers would move to San Diego where they continue to play today. The Chargers were led by quarterback John Hadl and wide receiver Lance Alworth and were coached their entire ten years in the AFL by hall of famer Sid Gillman. The Chargers would go into the NFL and experience success in the early 1980′s behind quarterback Dan Fouts, and also again in the early 1990′s under head coach Bobby Ross who they would make their first Super Bowl appearance under, only to lose to the San Francisco 49ers. The team would then experience a downturn in their success before rebounding back to become one of the premier teams in the league behind star running back LaDainian Tomlinson.

The Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins joined the AFL as an organization in 1965 when an expansion franchise was awarded to Joseph Robbie and actor Danny Thomas (who would eventually sell his share of the team to Robbie). The Dolphins would play home games during their four years in the AFL in the famous Miami Orange Bowl. The Dolphins record in the AFL was a dismal 15-32-2 and this was corrected in their first year in the NFL when they replaced their head coach with future hall of famer and eventual all time winning head coach Don Shula. The Dolphins would go on to have the first undefeated season by a professional football team in 1972 winning every game all the way through the Super Bowl, a feat that through the 2007 season has yet to be duplicated.

The New York Titans
The New York Titans were one of the original AFL franchises in 1960 and one of only three franchises placed in a city where there was already an NFL franchise. The Titans were respectable during their first two seasons, but after a losing season in 1962 the team’s lack of community support almost saw it go into bankruptcy. The franchise was saved from such a fate by a change of ownership, and with this change of ownership came a change in the team name to the New York Jets. This transition saw other changes being made as well, future hall of famer Weeb Ewbank was hired as head coach and the team eventually moved from the Polo Grounds to Shea Stadium. The second half of the 1960′s saw the Jets experience great success culminating with an AFL Championship in 1969 and a shocking Super Bowl victory (guaranteed by quarterback Joe Namath) over the NFL’s Baltimore Colts. Following their inclusion in the NFL, the Jets would experience a predominantly unsuccessful existence. Though they have had strong teams and made the playoffs from time to time, they have yet to have a chance to win another league championship.

The Oakland Raiders
The Oakland Raiders were the last of the original AFL franchises to join the league in 1960. The first few years of the franchise’s existence were truly chaotic, and the circumstances that they entered the league under equaled that. An AFL franchise had been awarded to Minnesota, but after the initial AFL draft the owners of the unnamed Minnesota team instead opted to join the NFL. This left the AFL one team short and set them on the task of finding a replacement ownership group and city. The focus shifted to Oakland, California after the owners of the Chargers insisted on another west coast team being added to the league so it would ease the demands on their travel needs. Once Oakland was welcomed into the league they were awarded the rights to the players that the Minnesota organization had drafted. Oakland played their first four home games that first year at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco, after that they received permission to play their last three home games in Candlestick Park also in San Francisco. They would later play games at Frank Youell Field before finally settling in at Oakland-Alameda Coliseum. The Raiders would struggle early on both on the field and financially and were actually saved from going out of business by a loan from Ralph Wilson, the owner of the Buffalo Bills. The team’s fortunes turned around in 1963 under new head coach and general manager Al Davis. The Raiders would improve steadily and win the 1967 AFL Championship before moving on and losing Super Bowl II to the NFL’s Green Bay Packers. The Raiders would fit right in with the NFL after the merger, winning one Super Bowl in the 1970′s and two in the 1980′s.

The American Football League of the 1960′s was the most successful challenger to the dominance of the National Football League, eventually forcing a merger that in the end made the combined league stronger and even more dominant than it had been. The AFL was innovative and forced the NFL to evolve into a more modern and exciting game. What made the new league a success was that the AFL was competitive in acquiring the players it needed, competitive in attracting the fan base it needed, and in the end when it won two of the first four Super Bowls, it proved itself competitive on the field as well.

Matthew Stafford was picked first as expected but there were some surprises in the draft itself.

Roger Goodell, the NFL Commissioner is envisioning a Super Bowl game in mid February if his plan of expanding the schedule to seventeen or eighteen games is carried and approved by the team owners. The proposal would eliminate the two pre season games and instead add them to the regular season. To him the idea has merit and it is essentially “taking the quality and improving upon it, instead of playing two meaningless games you end up playing a more meaningful twenty game framework.” The problem then would be making Super Bowl schedule that can be in conflict with other high profile events such as the Daytona 500, the NBA All Star game and the Winter Olympics. But compared to these events, there is no bigger event in the United States than the NFL Super Bowl. Ultimately, he says that there “are a lot of positives and opportunities to it but there are also cautionary things like overexposure, safety and health issues of the players and the agreements with television and other media organizations.”

Bill Belichick the coach of New England Patriots is not saying anything about the state of the throwing shoulder of Tom Brady.  Last Saturday, Bill said Brady came out of the previous night’s preseason game after a collision hit from Albert Haynesworth the Washington Redskins defensive tackle.  Bill said Bradys right shoulder is just the usual bumps and bruises due to a physical game.

They decided to field other quarterbacks in the Washington game because it was the team’s decision.  Bill said in a conference with reporters.  Tom wanted to play but they decided not to make him until he is evaluated.  Brady had two touch downs and completed 12 of 19 passes for 150 yards.  He also hit wide receiver Randy Moss six times for 90 yards and both TDs as the Patriots beat the Redskins 27-24 on Stephen Gostkowski’s last-minute field goal.  On Brandy’s last play, Haynesworth smashed him to the turf after throwing an incomplete third down pass just before the first two-minute warning.

Be a Real American – Buy a Truxedo Tonneau Cover

I have been living in the USA now for 6 months and I got so many impressions referring to all possible areas. First of all, there are the tons of fast food restaurants all over in the USA. It does not matter if you are in a small suburb, in the desert or in one of the cities, you can definitely find a McDonalds or Jack in the Box. There you can feed your starving stomach with burgers, fries and salads (since people have recognized that they are a bit too heavy for their size, even the guys with the “heavy bones”). I am from Germany and we have exactly the same problems with balanced foods and fat people – so this is not just an American issue. However, the problem in the US is that the number of restaurants is far higher than anywhere else in the world.

But this is just one impression I got after my arrival here in the states. Another was the open minded nature of the Americans and their interest in other cultures. For instance, when I arrived in L.A. and had no clue how to get to San Diego, there were so many people who offered me help and gave me some very helpful advice for my following trip. Eventually, the traveling by trains and busses took more than six hours, but this duration is caused by the bad train system between L.A. and San Diego, not due to the advice.

Furthermore, I have to admit that my impressions here are based on the characteristics of the sunshine state California and especially San Diego, the city I loved after I had set foot in the first time. I live next to the beach where I can surf all the day when I have off. Additionally the sun is shining at least 300 days a year, even now in November, when I am actually used to temperatures that demand warm jackets, scarves, and hats. Now, I am able to wear t-shirts and shorts most of the time. But as I mentioned, this kind of life is by far not common for the whole USA, so I want to underline that I can just tell my experiences and impressions I got here in Southern California.

The last characteristic I recognized about people in the USA is one that they have in common with many German people: the passion for autos. But there is one big difference concerning this passion. The Germans are more focused on sports cars like the Mercedes SLK or the Z3 that are very fast and compact. But Americans purchase autos that are able to drive off road without any hassles. They buy big trucks that are taller than a giraffe and heavier than an elephant so that I sometimes had the impression I was in a new episode of Jurassic Park just made on the streets of San Diego.

In order to adjust to my new hometown I bought one of these huge trucks. But afterwards I compared my vehicle to all the other ones and I recognized that just a big truck is not the key to being outstanding on the road. If you really want to convince your new neighbors that you are one of them, you need all the equipment for the truck. Unfortunately, this kind of adjustment is more expensive than you would think. There are tons of truck accessories and they all seem to be necessary for being competitive. So I had to figure out a criterion that helps me find the best accessory that I can afford with my monthly paycheck.

Finally I decided to buy a product that is both stylish and functional. So I ended up buying a tonneau cover. Now, I hope I am totally accepted by my American friends and colleagues and I can start introducing German habits in my new home. I promise nothing is better than a good Bavarian “Hefeweizen” and tasteful “Weiswurst”. The one thing I would never change just to fit in better with society – German food!

So if you also want to be a real, masculine American, I recommend buying all these kinds of accessories via internet. There you find the best and largest selection of tonneau covers, for instance, from the most reliable brands like Truxedo and Bed Rug–Tim Saunier

Best 5 American Cities to Bring Up Your Kids

What are the important factors that go into creating an ideal situation to bring up kids? Well, the role of the mom and dad-essentially, good parenting skills-is crucial. However, other things, such as the environment, education, and community too play a role. We bring you GreatDad’s list of the five best cities to raise your kids in:

5. Boston, Massachusetts: This largest city in New England is especially known for its excellent standards of higher education. Forbes magazine rated the Boston public school system, the oldest public school system in America, as the best in the world. Music, arts, sports, and a world-class urban environment make this a great city to raise your kids in.

4. Miami, Florida: Think about sun, surf, and cosmopolitan bustle and you think Miami. But there’s much more: this city has the largest school district in the world, an active sporting culture, and a beautiful climate year round. Your kids can nurture a love for nature through their visits to Parrot Jungle, Monkey Jungle, and Fairchild Tropical Gardens.

3. Minneapolis, Minnesota: Located on the banks of the Mississippi, this is the largest city in Minnesota. With a flourishing art scene, Minneapolis enjoys the presence of a community of musicians, artists, writers, and actors. Its residents love the outdoors and rate sports highly. All in all, this city with its lakes and parks is one great place to bring up your kids.

2. San Diego, California: Blessed with a sunny beachside atmosphere, this city has much more than water sports on offer. With a high per capita income, San Diego also offers good education opportunities-it has a medical school and at least three accredited law schools. And this is a city that almost knows no crime. Besides, special attractions for children abound, such as San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld San Diego, and Legoland.

1. Denver, Colorado: This scenic city, situated at the foot of the Southern Rocky mountains, is the capital of Colorado. Denver is home to the sprawling Denver Performing Arts Complex. Besides, the city has also spawned eight professional sports teams. Denver also has a pleasant natural environment all the year round, with winter sports such as skiing in the winter. All this makes it the best place to bring up your kids.

Bend, Oregon: Great American Vacation Getaway?

When you think about great American vacation towns, Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, or San Diego might come to mind. But what about Bend, Oregon? Unlike the previously mentioned cities, saying, “I’m off to visit Bend,” is likely to get you a quizzical look as if to say, “Where the heck is Bend?” lest you mention the state where it resides.

While Bend, Oregon might not be a place you have to worry about booking lodging months in advance for, nor is it the hotspot that Miami and other big towns are, its central location in Oregon, where it transitions from the Ponderosa Pine forest to the Great Basin high desert plateau, is an ideal vacation spot for active folks or families that want to cram as much fun into a getaway as they can.

Though you won’t have easy access to some huge theme park, raceway, or gambling mecca, you will be able to enjoy the site of Pilot Butte, a volcano that is located within the city’s boundaries. Bend is a youthful town that is growing into its own within the tourism industry. And don’t worry about Pilot Butte. It’s extinct.

A Short History

Founded just a century ago in 1905 around a community of 300 residents, Bend was originally a crossing point on the Deschutes River where it got its economic start as a logging town. Its name comes from “Farewell Bend,” the name used by early pioneers to indicate the spot in the Deschutes River where it was shallow enough to be crossable on horseback. After a development company was founded, a community began to form.

Modern Day Tourism

Today, Bend is considered a gateway for access to many outdoor activities which include mountain biking, hiking and camping, fishing, rafting, and rock climbing just to name a few.

Although Bend still relies partly on its logging roots, producing wood products, tourism is one of its largest sectors. The local ski resort brings in vacationers from all over the west coast. Other tourist attractions include a well-known microbrewery, the Cascade Lakes (providing great viewing of the Three Sisters volcanoes), and the Bend Film Festival.

The local ski resort is one of the most profitable tourist destinations in the city, which helps support businesses providing lodging in Bend, Oregon. Though because of its seasonal nature, the ski resort isn’t quite the city’s largest employer. That distinction goes to the healthcare industry and the local hospital.

Nevertheless, tourism is a very large part of Bend’s economy and in large part responsible for the town’s success.
